Facts
The Social Security system required widowers, but not widows, to prove dependency on the deceased spouse in order to collect benefits. Goldfarb (P) was a widower who could not prove support. He challenged this requirement, claiming that it violated equal protection. The lower court held that the proof requirement was unconstitutional.
