Facts
Harmelin (D) was convicted of possession of 672 grams of cocaine and was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. D appealed; his sentence was unconstitutionally cruel and unusual punishment. The sentence was significantly disproportionate to the crime he was convicted of.
