Johnson (D) beat his son for taking money from his mother's purse to buy a radio in contravention to D's prior instructions. D used an extension cord and left three red stripes on the child's back that were still visible 12 hours later. D was charged and convicted of cruelty to children and of battery. D appealed; D was within his parental rights.
