Facts
Pickering (P), a school teacher, sent a letter to a local newspaper criticizing the local Board of Education (D). P was fired after D determined that the letter was detrimental to the operation and administration of the public schools. P sued, claiming that D had violated his freedom of speech. The lower court held for D. P appealed.
