Riggs (P) was a law firm that rendered services to Lillibridge (D). P billed D for $35,000, and D offered settlement of $25,000. That was refused, and P sued D demanding $35,000 and then later amended the complaint to demand $50,000. The jury gave the verdict to P for $56,000. D appealed.
