Facts

Santobello (D) was charged with two felony counts. The prosecutor offered him a plea bargain in which D would plead guilty to a lesser-included offense, and the prosecutor would agree not to recommend a sentence. D pled guilty. However, at the sentencing hearing, a different prosecutor was present, and he recommended the maximum sentence. The judge imposed this sentence. D moved to withdraw his guilty plea, but the judge denied his motion. The court of appeals affirmed his conviction. The Supreme Court granted review.
