Sattar (P) was employed by Motorola (D). Pardesi (D1) was his boss and also a devout Muslim who immediately began to hound P about his abandonment of Islam. Eventually, P was passed over for promotion by D1, and when confronted D1 told P that if he returned to Islam his standing in the eyes of his superiors would improve. P requested a transfer, but that was denied. P made a formal complaint about D1 to his superiors. When P was assigned to work with other individuals, his performance was rated as outstanding. However, he was once again transferred to D1's control. Eventually, P was terminated even though he interfaced with different managers for a period of time. P sued Ds and the district court dismissed the complaints against the individual defendants as a supervisor does not fall within Title VII's definition of an employer. The District Court granted summary judgment on the Title VII claims and dismissed the state law claims. P appealed.
