Nature Of The Case

This section contains the nature of the case and procedural background.

Facts

Ps are several employees at GTE who worked under Morris Shields. They alleged that over a period of years he was grossly abusive, threatening, and engaged in degrading conduct. He regularly used vulgarity, verbally threatened and terrorized employees. He would physically charge at employees putting his head down, hands in fists and walk quietly or lunge at employees stopping very close to their faces. He frequently yelled and screamed at the top of his voice and pounded his fists. He called one employee into his office and kept her standing there for 30 minutes just staring at her. He required employees to vacuum their offices daily even though there were regular janitorial services. The jury gave the verdict to Ps. The Court of Appeals affirmed.
