Facts

During trial, D requested the exclusion of all witnesses from the courtroom. The prosecutor stated that most of the witnesses were police officers. D argued he would be prejudiced by their remaining in the courtroom. The motion to exclude was denied; the trial judge wanted the officers to listen in to learn about which of their police practices were being questioned and to give careful thought to their own practices. D was convicted and appealed.
